AI: A Personal Compendium for Your Convenience of Use

I’ve written about AI, particularly leading its application in organizations, since 2018.  Not surprisingly, it resembles and differs from other precipitators of organizational change, including technological precipitators.  Below appears a briefly annotated list of my attempts to contribute to consideration of just what we are looking at and how we might act most effectively.

Beginning with the most recent.  The AI Innovator https://theaiinnovator.com/ put me on the masthead this year.  I’ve had the good fortune to work with its editor-in-chief, Deborah Yao, over multiple years and 3 ‘stops’.  My most recent 4 pieces on AI appear there as, likely, will at least the next few.

AI is org change.  It is NOT just a technology.  Technology seldom is. It’s the so-called ‘soft stuff’ that will determine the arc of how we infuse the technology into the world.

We’ve been here before—at least in sight of ‘here’—with other technologies.  History holds lessons worth learning.

As for the future, if ever we needed to get back to fundamentally good education, then this would be a good time.

AI organizations are still organizations, organizations with similar challenges because they’re human organizations.  Those challenges include succession.

I can’t find the survey, even with help from Opus 5.5, but once upon a time, a survey (summarized in a side column in Wired or Fast Company), found something around 90% of surveyed top executives felt that the #1 issue approaching was AI even as about the same number of executives reported spending less than 10% of their time considering it.  That’s very human and very unfortunate. It’s past time for leaders to ‘get it in gear’. Leaders need to, in the words of George S. Patton, “Lead me. Follow me. Or, get out of my way.”

We tried.  Even then nascent AI could have greatly helped medical care, especially expedited clinical learning in response to the pandemic. I include the article about telemedicine to make the point about how we can neutralize the upside of technology—even the ‘phone’.

Here’s an advisory tale of how we don’t leverage potential change due to poor change design stemming from tunnel vision.
